Sony Cybershot DSC-W800 Camera Review

Sony Cybershot DSC-W800 Camera
Nowadays, almost all mobile phones contain an exceptional camera that can capture high resolution images that most people love to use and share on social media sites. Some even have dual lenses to provide a more detailed image that even professional photographers rate with flying colors.

But, mobile phones are, Mobile Phones! We use them to communicate with other people and most of the time, we convert them to our portable and easy to use mobile computer, which in turn, drain its battery and leaving us to less captured happy moments, bummer, right? Well, if you are a bit short on budget but want a separate digital camera, we can present you one.

This Sony Cybershot DSC-W800 is a budget camera that we have just tested on one of our trips abroad, but of course, the question from you will be, “Does it take decent shots?”, Well, read on to find out!

UNBOXING
The product is packed in a moderately small box with black and orange accents. The front shows a graphical image of the camera itself and the model number (Which in this case, DSC-W800). The front-side of the box contains the main specifications of the camera (In detail later), while the rear of the box shows more technical information about the product.

PRODUCT REVIEW
Now, what will you get with a small budget, firstly, you will get a 20.1 MP 1/2.3" Super HAD CCD Sensor with 5x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom up front, which in our opinion, is quite decent. On the top of the device, you will find the Cybershot logo on the left followed by the power button and two stage shutter button.

Going around the back, you will have a 2.7" Clear Photo LCD 230k-Dot Monitor which is not what we expected because the display looks blur on hand, but if you try to zoom in the image (Or transfer it on a computer) and you will get what you are looking for. Next to the LCD is (From the top), the Zoom Keys (Can be used while capturing photos or viewing them), a Video recording button, Arrow Keys which also doubles as Gallery Button, Timer Button, Flash Button and Delete Button. Finally, there is a Menu button on the lower right of the back below the Arrow Keys.

camera rear

The bottom of the device houses the tripod mount hole, a plastic cover of the battery and the SD Card Slot, and also a mini speaker.

camera bottom

Going to the sides (Facing the front of the camera) the right top side of the device contains the mic of the camera while going to the left and you will have the lanyard hole and the A/V and USB Charging Port. Also, (Although a bit hidden), at the lower left of the USB Charging port sits a small LED Charging indicator

Now, lets talk about performance, but wait, we are no camera expert! So to make things short, in our very honest opinion, this camera takes decent and colorful shots. Colors are quite natural and pleasing to the eye, and also sharp (Well, not in the viewfinder of the camera because of the low resolution display).

Also, keep in mind that in broad daylight, the camera takes around 1 second in capturing and another 2 seconds in previewing the image (No setting to remove the preview) which gives you 3 second gap between shots. In low light situations, the capturing gap time increases to 5 seconds, and if you have shaky hands, expect blurry images (Quite true in low light and artificial light, not in day light). Here are some sample untouched shots from the camera (In full 20.1 Megapixel resolution)

Video sample? We got you covered, well, not that much at the moment though because we only have a daylight video sample, anyways, here it is (We will update this post with a night video later)

VERDICT
With the current price (As of time of writing) of $88.00 (PHP4,400), this camera is really budget oriented but does not lack the required features of a basic digital camera. The images are good enough to share on social media sites but not on a professional level though. The video is a bit unusable (Thanks to the Software Image Stabilization), but still, if you or someone you know needs a budget imaging device, this is quite a shot.
