Asus Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 [ZC553KL] Review

Its 2017 and more smartphones have been released in the past year up to now. More powerful processors, more RAM, more internal storage, faster connectivity options and more new features are always being developed and implemented in new phones that are announced and released today, but wait, these comes at a hefty price!

Well, not all the time, some OEM manufactures tend to create and release smartphones that are really budget friendly that automatically becomes an eye-magnet for some. But, despite all of the efforts of these OEM manufacturers, their product tags along a huge drawback, short-lifespan, and who else will want that kind of device, right?

In the case of Asus, they made something that many customers will really love; A budget smartphone that is packed with awesome and cool features plus a hefty battery and a large screen size. Already craving for more info? Read on the review below!

P.S – A Tempered glass screen protector has been placed upon purchase (It is not included in the phone package itself), also, some apps were installed on first use (Not all apps shown are included upon purchase)

UNBOXING
The front of the box shows the picture of the device and a highlight of one of its features, the 4100mAh battery. Moving to the sides, on the right side, some of the technical features of the phone, and on the left you get a Zenfone 3 Max print. The serial information and MAC information of the phone is printed on the back.

Sliding the main cover of the box and you will be presented with the main phone itself (We’ll set that aside for now), under the main phone unit, you will get the “Unread” User Guide and Warranty Information Form

Within the box, you will also get a collapsible power brick (Were not sure about this, but we think the pin can be replaced with another one), and a USB OTG Cable which can be used with some accessories like mouse and keyboard.

Also, you will get a Micro USB Charging cable, a decent in-ear type headphone with mic and button control, and 2 additional pairs of rubber ear tips for the headphones. Lastly, Asus included a Sim Ejector tool printed with the Asus Logo

PRODUCT REVIEW
Now let’s begin explaining the features that this phone has and why you should consider this if you are on a lookout for a budget phone. Firstly, the front sports a huge 5.5” display with some quite small bezels on top and bottom. Going to the back and you will be greeted with the 16MP Camera with Full Manual controls flanked with Dual tone flash on the left side of the lens. The laser autofocus module sits at the right side of the lens. The fingerprint scanner is also here located at the bottom portion of the camera.

The bottom portion of the phone houses the mic, the micro USB port, and bottom firing speakers. While on the right side, located at the top are the power button and volume controls. Moving on the top and you will see the headphone jack and a noise cancelling mic.

And oh, we forgot to mention that the upper front of the phone contains the earpiece and front facing 8MP Camera and the additional proximity sensor. Moving to the left and you will see the dual sim tray that can be released by using the included sim ejector tool. The sim tray can house 2 sims at the same time (one MICRO and one NANO) OR one Nano sim and a micro SD Card (for storage expansion options)

Well, this review won’t be complete unless some of the UI are shown, right? Well, the UI is a custom version of stock android (well, not all, some features and looks are still there). Take a look at the UI of some the stock apps included.

The Camera? It is quite good on daylight shots, but what we don’t like about it is its video recording performance. Focusing from a close perspective to a farther perspective takes some seconds to complete and it quite lags on the end video product (Camera and Video samples are posted on the bottom of the post). Anyways, here is the UI of the camera

Here are the camera samples taken from the phone. Please do take note that these are not modified, they are untouched samples.

VERDICT
If you are more focused on raw performance (Like editing and gaming), we can actually recommend this phone for you. If you are more on Photography, the manual controls of this camera will delight you even more, it’s just that the Video recording capability of this phone is “Just Watchable” on our opinion. If you are more on recording, we’ll have to say that you need to look for other phones out there.

The Octa-core processor of this phone plus its 3GB of RAM can handle almost any daily work that you do. And with its fingerprint scanner, you will get a strong security option to protect your phone. The 4100mAh battery lasts long and can also act as a power bank for other devices which makes this phone from Asus a very great deal for almost everyone.
